One of my favorite places to photograph is in Palm Springs, mainly because I feel like it offers something very unique in terms of landscapes and backdrops. Palm Springs is funky and colorful. It also offers a dreamy atmosphere with its desert and mountains.

Steps to Elope in Palm Springs

STEP 1: Select Your Guest Count

This is important because planning an elopement with just the two of you is different than planning an elopement with you two and 10 guests. Once you have determined your guest count, it will guide you towards choosing your elopement ceremony location, whether you'd prefer an intimate dinner at a restaurant or a reception with your nearest and dearest at at airbnb or hotel, etc.

STEP 2: Select a Date for Your Palm Springs Elopement

The first step in planning your Palm Springs elopement is selecting the perfect time of year. The desert climate boasts over 350 days of sunshine, but temperatures can vary dramatically. Consider the following months for your elopement:

1. October to April: Ideal temperatures (70-85°F) and minimal rainfall make this the best time to elope in Palm Springs.
2. May to September: Expect hotter temperatures (up to 110°F), but lower prices and fewer tourists.

June - August are EXTREMELY hot. Temperatures range between 105-120 degrees, making the whole experience much less fun.

STEP 3: Decide Where You'd Like to Elope - Open Space, Hotel, or Airbnb

In order to elope to Palm Springs, a location will have to be selected for your ceremony. Below are some of my personal favorite places to elope in Palm Springs! I've divided them by the following categories: open space, hotel, or airbnb.

Atmosphere: Funky, fun, and colorful, lots of plants, off-beat

A Little About The Space:

This space is for couples who love greenery. For elopements and intimate weddings, the investment is $1000 for up to 20 guests and 2 hours of renting the grounds.

Indian Canyons

Atmoshphere: Epic views with the classic Palm Springs canyons, mountains, and palm trees

A Little About The Space: Admission is $12/adult and is typically open 8 am - 5 pm.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

Atmosphere: This is the world's largest rotating tram cart and travels over 2.5 miles along the breathtaking cliffs of Chino Canyon. It transports riders to the Mt. San Jacinto State park. The total journey is about 10 minutes. Once you reach the mountain station, which is 8,516 feet, there are two restaurants, decks to enjoy the view, a museum, 2 documentary theaters, a gift shop, and over 50 miles of hiking trails.

A Little About The Space: It costs $36.00 to use to aerial tramway

Fun Fact: What is crazy cool about this space is that because of it's elevation, it has completely different weather than that in Palm Springs. For example, during November - March, you can be relaxing by the pool in Palm Springs with 100+ degree weather and than just a couple of minutes later, you can be at the top of the aerial tramway where it's 45 degrees and there's snow on the ground.

Palm Springs Desert Wedding

Atmosphere: Open desert near with beautiful views of the San Jacinto Mountains

Little About The Space: If you've always dreamed of an elopement in the desert, there is an area of open desert near the visitors center. This area includes views of the San Jacinto mountains, windmills in the distance, and the "Welcome to Palm Springs" sign.

How to Access this Space: This is a really easy spot to access, as well as free. To arrive there, park at the visitor's center, located right of Highway 111 as you enter Palm Springs. Then simply walk out into the open desert until you both find a spot that feels right to you.

The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens

Atmosphere: For couples seeking an adventurous and non-traditional elopement location.

Little About The Space: The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens offers a unique and immersive experience. With its 1,200 acres of natural desert habitat, this location provides a stunning backdrop for your ceremony, surrounded by desert flora and fauna.

The Desert Lily

Atmosphere: The Desert Lily is a secluded bed and breakfast in Joshua Tree that offers a serene and intimate setting for an elopement.

Little About The Space: Surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the high desert, this location provides a truly unique backdrop for your special day. Palm Springs Airbnbs for Elopements

If you're thinking you want to elope to Palm Springs, another option is to have a ceremony & intimate reception at a local airbnb. Essentially, the key is to look for an airbnb that will have the space to set up an area for both your ceremony & reception. The benefit of a Palm Springs Airbnb elopement or wedding is that your nearest and dearest can stay at the airbnb, since it will not only serve as your celebratory space, but also as your accommodations area.

Do Airbnbs Allow Weddings?

The one thing to keep in mind is that one absolutely needs to notify the owners of the airbnb in advance of his/her plans to get married within the space. Every host has different policies and not all Airbnbs allow events.

Step 4: Obtain a California Marriage License

The Riverside County Clerk's Office is conveniently located in nearby Palm Desert. The Clerk's office grants public and civil marriage licenses Monday - Friday (excluding holidays) from 8am to 4pm. Appointments are not required for public marriage licenses but couples are recommended to apply online or fill out a printed application ahead of time. Licenses are valid for 90 days and may be used in any country in the State of California. Appointments are required for a civil ceremony and can be made by calling (760) 863-7490.

To obtain a marriage license you must meet the following requirements:

• Both parties MUST be 18 years of age or older.
• Names & birth places for each of your parents, including your mother’s maiden name
• For You & Your Partner: full Names, address, date & place of birth
• Both parties MUST come into the office TOGETHER to obtain the marriage license.
• Both parties MUST have a valid, current picture I.D. The I.D. must be government issued. Some examples include: State issued Drivers License or I.D. card; Military I.D.; Green Card; Naturalization Certificate; Passport.

The fee for a public marriage license is $90.00

IMPORTANT: In order for your ceremony to be legally binding, you must have one witness and an officiant.

Changing Your Names:

Both Parties can choose the names they will use after marriage. This doesn’t apply to first names. You can choose to keep your last name or use your partner’s last name. You can also create a hyphenated last name or change your middle name for a similar effect.
