Eloping in California | Marriage Laws
In California, you don’t need to get married in the county you received your license in. For example, if you got your marriage license in Los Angeles County, you can get married in Ventura County. There also isn’t a waiting period in California, so you can get married the same day you pick up your marriage license! The marriage license is valid for 90 days.
Below are the basic marriage requirements when it comes to eloping in California.
- You must be at least 18 years old. Any person under the age of 18 must have written consent from at least one parent (or guardian). You will also need permission from a California Super Court Judge.
- Must provide proper legal documentation, such as a driver’s license, passport, social security number, or birth certificate
- (If married prior) you must provide evidence that you have terminated your previous marriage
- Parties may not be already married to each other or other individuals
- You must have at least one witness (must be over the age of 18)
- You must obtain a California marriage license

Next, you’re going to want to decide your date for eloping in California. Depending on the time of year you’re wanting to have your California elopement, this can determine what date you choose. Keep in mind that the seasons for your elopement can definitely play a major influence on your wedding day. So before you decide on a date for your California elopement, make sure you are also keeping in mind the season/time of year.
What Is The Best Time Of Year For an Elopement in California?
California is known for its bright, sunny, and warm weather. However, if you’re planning on eloping in California, it’s important to know what is the best time of year to elope in California. Knowing this can dramatically impact your entire elopement experience!
Winter
If you’re looking to have your California elopement in Winter, then I highly recommend checking out the more inland desert areas. However, keep in mind that these areas can get especially frigid at night, but are more bearable during the day.
Spring
Eloping in California during the Spring can guarantee that beautiful breezy early summer weather. The temperatures are a lot milder than in the summer months and you will also avoid many crowds during the peak tourism months (aka summer/fall). Wildflowers are also blooming during spring which makes for some stunning backdrops.
Summer
Summer is the perfect season to elope in California if you’re wanting to head to the mountains. You will have some of the most stunning views and a nice breeze. If you’re heading toward Southern California, then beaches are without a doubt a solid choice for your California elopement
Fall
In the Fall season for eloping in Californiat, head to the beautiful beaches and lakes that will take your breath away. In Northern California, you can find the leaves changing and the mountains being the perfect getaway for your special day!
4. Obtain A Marriage License For A California Elopement
You can get a marriage license at any County Clerk’s office in California by bringing a valid ID and $100.00. The marriage license it only valid for 90 days.
One thing to note: The County Clerk’s office isn’t open on weekends, and it often closes early on weekdays.
In CA, you don't need to get married in the county you receive your license in. For example, if you got your marriage license in LA county, you can get married in Ventura county.
IMPORTANT: In order for your ceremony to be legally binding, you must have one witness and an officiant.
Changing Your Names:
Both Parties can choose the names they will use after marriage. This doesn't apply to first names. You can choose to keep your last name or use your partner's last name. You can also create a hyphenated last name or change your middle name for a similar effect.

Do I Need an Officiant and Witness?
Yes. In order for your ceremony to be legally binding, you must have an officiant and a witness. If you have a confidential license, an officiant must sign the license, but no witnesses are required.
Information Needed for Your Marriage License:
- For You & Your Partner: full Names, address, date & place of birth
- Names & birth places for each of your parents, including your mother's maiden name
- Government Issued Photo IDS, such as a passport, driver's license, military ID, or state issued ID.
- $100 cash for the application fee. The exact amount varies per county
5. Secure Necessary Permits For Eloping in California
If you are planning on having your California elopement in a national park or state forest, then you will need to obtain a special use permit or wedding permit. Depending on which state park/state forest you choose to have your California elopement, will determine the cost for the permit. Each park/forest will have different rules and pricing for their permits. Before you start making plans for your California elopement, make sure you brush up on some information about wedding permits in specific places to elope in California.

7. Make Sure To Book Your Other Wedding Vendors | How to Elope in California
It's important that when you are looking to book your California elopement, you are also looking to book your other wedding vendors. Wedding vendors tend to book out fairly quickly, so rather than waiting to book your wedding vendors, I highly recommend booking your vendors as soon as possible. You'll want to book:

- Elopement Outfits (dresses can take up to 4 months to be shipped and alterations usually take 1 - 2 months)
- A Officiant
- A Makeup & Hair Artist
- A Florist if You'd Like a Bouquet & Boutonniere
These are generally the only vendors needed for an elopement. I'd reach out to all vendors a minimum of 6 months in advance to get a feel for their California elopement packages.
8. Book Your Accommodations & Travel Plans | Eloping in California
Lastly, you're going to want to make sure you book your accommodations and travel plans. This includes making sure you book your hotel or Airbnb, rentals, and having your travel itineraries all set up for you. Many hotels offer special California elopement packages, so this is something I always recommend asking them about!

California Elopement With a Forest Atmosphere
Yosemite National Park
One of the most beautiful places for a California elopement has to be Yosemite National Park. Yosemite National Park is located in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. You have incredible cliffside views, rock formations that will take your breath away, stunning forests and meadows, and some of the best hiking trails.
When it comes to having your California elopement at Yosemite National Park, there are a ton of different ceremony locations. You can view some of the ceremony locations at Yosemite National Park for your California elopement here!
Yosemite is open all year, but keep in mind the weather varies dramatically by season. Spring and early summer are popular for the waterfalls, while fall offers colorful foliage. Be prepared for any weather changes, particularly if you choose an outdoor location. Additionally, it's recommended to elope early in the morning to avoid crowds, especially in popular locations.
Permits: If you’re wanting to have your California elopement at Yosemite National Park, just know that there is a permit fee that you’re going to have to pay. The cost of a wedding permit at Yosemite National Park is $150. Apply at least a few weeks in advance to ensure you get your desired date and location. Sequoia National Park
The towering Sequoia trees in Sequoia National Park make for a truly unique and awe-inspiring backdrop for your elopement.
Permit: To elope in this park, you'll need a Special Use Permit, which costs $50. You should apply for the permit at least a few weeks before your planned elopement date.
The park is open year-round, but some areas may be inaccessible during winter due to snow. Remember that Sequoia National Park is a protected area, so ensure your ceremony and any subsequent activities respect the park's rules and regulations.

Permits: When it comes to permits for your California elopement at Big Sur, this will completely depend on which park you choose to elope at. However, most public lands in Big Sur require permits. While the process for every park varies, the majority of state parks fees average about $300-$400 with at least 30-60 days required to process your application.

Permits: You'll need to apply for a Special Events Permit from the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. The cost starts at $100, but it can vary depending on the specifics of your event.
The Observatory is open Tuesday through Friday, and the best time to elope is during the week to avoid crowds. After the ceremony, you can explore the exhibits, enjoy the stunning views of Los Angeles, or even look at the stars through the Observatory's telescopes.
Santa Barbara Courthouse

Ceremonies are performed on the hour and half-hour during business hours, Monday through Friday. You can have your ceremony in the private Mayor's Balcony or Fourth Floor for an additional fee. Keep in mind that these locations are booked well in advance, so it's best to plan early.
Permits: The cost for a ceremony is $108, and you'll also need a California marriage license, which costs $105 in San Francisco.

Joshua Tree National Park
Joshua Tree National Park is one of the most well-known elopement locations for your California elopement. Glamis Sand Dunes
If you’re wanting to think outside of the box for your elopement in California, then take a look at the Glamis Sand Dunes in Brawley, California. The Glamis Sand Dunes make you feel transported to another world, and honestly, sometimes you can forget you’re even in California. With miles of sand surrounding you, it is absolutely stunning. The Glamis Sand Dunes are perfect for eloping in California if you’re wanting to do something a bit more fun and different for your California elopement. Keep in mind that you may need to do a bit of walking in the sand to get to certain peaks, so dress comfortably!
Permits: If you’re wanting to have your elope in California at the Glamis Sand Dunes, then you’re in luck. There are no permits for your California elopement! The only permit that you will need is if you plan on using an OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle) to get to a specific location at the Glamis Sand Dunes.
