Where Is Your El Matador Beach Elopement Located?
Located in sunny Malibu, California, El Matador beach is one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. You can find the entrance to El Matador State Beach is located alongside the Pacific Coast Highway. El Matador Beach is actually one of three beaches that make up the Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach. El Pescador, La Piedra, and of course El Matador beach are the three pocket beaches that make up this beautiful state beach. I believe that El Matador beach, however, is the most beautiful.
Who Is An El Matador Beach Elopement Perfect For?
If you love beaches, water views, gorgeous sunsets, and stunning rock formations, then El Matador Beach is perfect for you. El Matador State Beach is hidden down a steep staircase with rock formations surrounding you. You also get tiny glimpses of tide pools that make this such a unique Malibu beach for your elopement.
Parking Information For Your El Matador Beach Elopement
Before you start running to Malibu for your El Matador beach elopement, there is some important parking information that you will need to know.
- The parking situation El Matador State Beach can be near impossible. With only approximately 20 spots in the lot, if you are not getting there early enough then it seems you will be out of luck to find a spot. This is especially the case on the weekends. This is why I recommend that if you’re planning on having an El Matador State Beach elopement, you stick to going between Monday-Thursday. You will have much better luck finding a parking spot for your El Matador elopement.
- If you can’t find a parking spot at the designated parking area at El Matador State Beach, many people choose to park on the street. However, a word of caution. Please read the signs if you choose to do this, as there is a chance that you may get ticketed if parked in the wrong section.
- Currently, it costs around $8 for parking at El Matador Beach.
- You are allowed to park at El Matador Beach between 8AM - Sunset
Photo Locations For Your El Matador State Beach Elopement
Despite the fact that you are at one singular beach, there are several different photo locations you can explore during your El Matador State Beach Elopement.
The Rocks
As vague as this sounds, one of the standout features of El Matador State Beach is the rock formations. These beautiful rocks and caves give the most stunning backdrop that I have ever seen. You can really get creative with your wedding portraits and use these rock formations to your advantage to get some absolutely stunning photos.
During Lowtide
One of the best times to take your wedding portraits is during low tide at El Matador State Beach. It is during low tide that you are able to explore the caves and tidepools and experience the sealife at El Matador Beach. It brings a whole different dynamic to your wedding portraits. And will truly be an experience for your El Matador State Beach elopement. Just make sure that you are aware of the rocks that will be more prominent during low tide and watch your step!

Tips to Have An Epic El Matador Beach Elopement
As a Los Angeles Wedding Photographer, I have had my fair share of beach elopements. El Matador is one of those beaches that absolutely takes your breath away. However, it’s important to know a few tips in order for you to have the most epic El Matador Beach elopement.
Invest in your elopement photography
Is this biased? Probably, but I don’t care! I highly recommend investing in your elopement photography. These are your memories and your legacy. While yes, a camera phone can provide you with photos from the moment, it will not deliver what a professional elopement photographer can deliver. You deserve to invest in your memories and cherish them forever. Hang them in your home, print them in a wedding album, or just share them with friends and family. When you choose to have an elopement at El Matador Beach, you’re splurging on the memories of you and your partner. It’s worth the investment into yourselves and documenting your love story.
Write Personal Vows/Love Letters
One way to have an absolutely epic El Matador Beach elopement is to have you and your partner write personal vows/love letters to one another. This is one way to add a bit more intentionality and intimacy to your wedding day. Most couples will choose to read these letters during their first look before their ceremony. Trust me when I say that it can really bring in the waterworks. An elopement is all about adding more intimacy to your wedding day, and this is the perfect way to add to that!
Important Info For Your Elopement at El Matador Beach in Malibu, California
Below are some key points that you may need to know if you’re planning on heading to beautiful Malibu, California for your El Matador Beach elopement.
- In my opinion, this beach gets the absolute best light out of all the beaches in Southern California. The beautiful rock formations that are at El Matador State Beach offer great protection from harsh lighting. These rock formations also prevent unflattering shadows and haze, which is a MAJOR yes. This is especially important when it comes to your wedding portraits. Harsh lighting, shadows, and haze can all play a major role in how well your wedding photos turn out. Lighting is everything and for El Matador Beach to have this sort of protection and lighting scenario, is rare. At sundown the light passes through crevices within the rock formation, lending to really ethereal light and photos.
- Most of the water at El Matador State Beach is a no-swim zone, solely for the fact of the number of rocks in the water. However, there are areas where you are able to swim! Most of El Matador State Beach is best for strolls by the water, sunbathing, and catching gorgeous sunsets.
- Don’t forget to apply for a permit. Even though you are planning on having your California elopement on a semi-secluded beach, you still need to apply for a permit. Check out the state beaches website for more information on wedding permits for your El Matador State Beach elopement.
- There are no dogs allowed at El Matador State Beach.
- Keep in mind that there are no bathrooms at El Matador Beach. I know, bummer, right? There are a few porta-potties next to the parking lot, however. So make sure that you are fully prepped and ready prior to leaving your home, Airbnb, or hotel before making your way to El Matador Beach.
Outfit Tips For Your Malibu Beach Elopement
Before you can hop in your car and head to the beach to get married, here are a few outfit tips for your El Matador Beach Elopement.
Bring along wet shoes just in case.
If you’re planning on having an El Matador Beach elopement, then you’re going to want to make sure you bring wet shoes just in case. As I mentioned before, El Matador State Beach can get pretty rocky. The last thing you want is to get hurt on your wedding day. You would rather be safe than sorry! So bring along some wet shoes or even sandals to wear while walking on the beach
Wear Wedding Attire You Can Move In
Having an El Matador Beach elopement means that you are going to be doing a lot of walking and moving on the beach. You’re going to want to make sure you are wearing wedding attire that you feel comfortable and can move around in.
Don’t Be Afraid To Get Dirty

So make sure that if you’re planning on having a California beach elopement, you keep what you’re wearing in mind. Don’t choose anything that you would mind getting dirty!
