Best Hummingbird Nest Ranch Wedding Guide!

Are you having a wedding at Hummingbird Nest Ranch in Simi Valley? I am a SoCal wedding photographer familiar with this venue! This comprehensive guide will help you plan your dream Hummingbird Nest Ranch Wedding, providing essential information about the history, FAQs, cost, themes, and more. Let's begin!

Hummingbird Nest Ranch History

Hummingbird Nest Ranch is located in Simi Valley. It's a Spanish style hotel that lies in the heart of the mountains. The property includes lots of olive trees, fountains, breathtaking canyon views, and luxurious accommodations.

Richard Robertson was commissioned to create an expansive 17,000 square-foot Spanish hacienda and by 2004, this gorgeous property became known as Hummingbird Nest Ranch.

Best Timeline for a Hummingbird Nest Ranch Wedding

Below is my recommended wedding day timeline for a wedding specifically at the Hummingbird Nest Ranch. Let’s say your ceremony start time is at 5:00 pm. Here’s my recommended timeline for that.

9:00 – 12:30 – Hair/Makeup (This start time will vary depending on how many people will be getting their hair/makeup done; typically, the bride is last. This can also be done at the Hummingbird Nest Ranch since they provide a getting ready space)

12:00 – Photographer(s) Arrive at the Hummingbird Nest Ranch

12:00 – 12:40 – Details (Dress, shoes, rings, etc.)

12:45 – 1:45 – Getting Ready Photos at the Venue(One photographer is with Partner A & second photographer is with Partner B)

*Note: If you don’t have a second photographer, more time is needed here as the solo photographer will have to take extra time to document Partner A & Partner B.

1:45 – 2:45 – First Look + Couple Portraits

2:45 – 3:15 – Wedding Party Portraits (More time is needed here is there is no second photographer)

3:15 – 3:45 – Family Portraits

3:45 – 4:40 – Buffer Time (Super important to always leave buffer time within the schedule should things run a bit behind schedule. It also allows the couple to just relax more…the day won’t feel rushed.) If the timeline goes exactly to plan, the couple can use this time to relax or take extra photos. ;)

4:40 – Couple Preps for Ceremony / Photographer Documents Ceremony Details

5:00 – 5:30 – Ceremony

5:30 – 6:30 – Cocktail Hour + Couple Portraits

*The cocktail hour typically takes place during the golden hour (best time for photos because of the light), so usually about 30 minutes of couple portraits are taken during this time.)

6:45 – Grand Entrance

6:45 – 10:00 – Reception (First Dance, Parent Dances, Speeches, Open Dancing, Etc.)

5 Tips for a Wedding at Hummingbird Nest Ranch

Tip 1: If You're Having a Wedding During the Summer, Consider a Sunset Wedding

Simi Valley gets ridiculously hot during summer months. For this reason, it's worth considering having a sunset wedding to avoid the heat. I also recommend taking portraits during the morning and around sunset. This will avoid unflattering, harsh shadows in photos. It will also prevent your wedding party and family getting overheated during the portraits.

Tip 2: Schedule Your Wedding during the Ranch's Ideal Season

Hummingbird Nest Ranch is known for its stunning outdoor landscapes, and to make the most of this picturesque venue, plan your wedding during the ideal season. Spring and early fall offer the most pleasant temperatures and blooming flora, ensuring that your wedding photos will showcase the beauty of the ranch. This venue tends to get very hot during summer months and very cold during winter months, so a Fall or Spring wedding are ideal. Additionally, consider scheduling your event during the "golden hour" for optimal lighting and breathtaking sunset backdrops.

Tip 3: Utilize the Variety of Venue Spaces at the Venue

Hummingbird Nest Ranch offers several unique and picturesque venue spaces for your dream wedding. As you plan your special day, explore options such as the Grand Prix Lawn, the Pool Area, and the Olive Grove. Each space offers a distinct ambiance, allowing you to tailor your ceremony and reception to your personal style. To optimize your wedding experience, consider holding your ceremony in one area and the reception in another, maximizing the beauty and versatility of the venue.

Tip 4: Keep Decor Simple

Hummingbird Nest Ranch is one of those wedding venues that is so inherently breathtaking, you really don't need to add much. In fact, overdoing it could distract from the views and natural beauty.

The convenience of having a wedding within a space that already offers so much natural beauty is that the "less is more" approach often applies to weddings within these type of spaces. With some lovely linens, candlelight, and florals, anyone of these spaces would be an absolute dream.

The one thing I will say will make a huge difference (atmosphere wise) at any wedding is florals.

Tip 5: Create a Fun Atmosphere

Invite your nearest and dearest - Get clear on who you really want there. It helps to create boundaries, for example, not inviting friends you haven't seen in over 5 years.

Add buffer time within the timeline - to encourage being present. It's important to add 10 minutes here and there to just sit down with your loved ones and partner...and soak it all in.

Good music, good food, and an open bar - help tremendously when it comes to providing guests with a good time!

How to Take Full Advantage of a Hummingbird Nest Ranch Wedding

When it comes to a Hummingbird Nest wedding, there is really so much beauty that this venue offers. This venues provides Spanish architecture that really evokes a romantic feeling. The Hummingbird Nest venue includes an abundance of olive trees, cobblestone buildings, bricks, clay tile roofs, sights of the canyon and mountains, nature all around, a beautiful lake, etc. There is a lot to take in!

With this in mind, I'd suggest noting what you two love the most about your space, so it can be well integrated on your wedding day to create something a little extra special. For example, if it's the Spanish architecture you both really love, why not have a guitar player playing Spanish music during the ceremony or cocktail hour?

If it's the sights of the canyons and mountains that leave you in awe, some string lighting would further enhance the views at your Hummingbird Nest Ranch wedding.

If it's the nature and olive trees that draw you in, why not get married underneath one of their larger trees.

There are endless ways to really personalize your wedding day to make it FEEL like you two.

Useful Review for Your Hummingbird Nest Ranch Wedding

"We just got married at Hummingbird Nest Ranch about 2 weeks ago and couldn't have been more pleased. We used all 3 outdoor spaces at the Villa for each part of our wedding. The venue itself is inherently beautiful and our guests were blown away by it. Because of this, you don't really have to add that much in way of decorations since it's already so gorgeous.

We had a sunset/evening wedding, which i would recommend for the summer in Simi Valley given the heat. The lighting at that time of the day around the Villa was amazing. Michelle manages the venue and all her recommendations for vendors were spot on. We also used her, along with her assistant Nicole, as our wedding coordinators. They were amazing- kept things flowing, made adjustments as needed and really completely eliminated the usual day-of wedding stress for my now husband and me. It was an incredibly day and we've received so many compliments from our guests. Highly recommend Hummingbird Nest Ranch."
